CD Projekt Red Moves Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel into Pre-Production

Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Enters Pre-Production, Confirms CD Projekt Red | Visionary CIOs

CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 has entered pre-production, marking a significant milestone in the game’s development. While it’s been known since 2022 that a new installment codenamed Project Orion was in the works, the studio confirmed this week that the conceptual phase has now concluded and work on the next major game in the Cyberpunk universe is moving forward.

In a recent update, the studio stated, “Several weeks ago, the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase.” As a result, the game, now referred to as Cyberpunk 2, is no longer just a codename but a project actively being shaped in pre-production. However, fans eager to dive back into Night City or a new setting within the same universe should temper expectations, as the pre-production phase signals that the game is still years away from release.

A Sequel Years in the Making

Hints of a follow-up have been circulating for some time. In 2022, CD Projekt Red released a development roadmap that included “Project Orion,” described as a project that would “further develop the potential embodied by the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.” While the word “sequel” was never explicitly used, the implication was clear. Now, with the project officially progressing, CD Projekt Red seems committed to building on the foundation laid by the original game.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky start when it launched in late 2020, plagued by bugs and performance issues, particularly on last-generation consoles. Since then, the studio has made substantial updates and improvements, regaining player trust and recognition. The announcement of Cyberpunk 2 comes at a time when the game’s reputation has significantly improved, signaling CDPR’s intention to take a more cautious, deliberate approach with the sequel’s development.

Given the lessons learned from the first launch, the company is expected to prioritize quality and polish this time around. While details remain scarce about the setting, characters, or storyline of the upcoming title, its progression into pre-production marks the beginning of a long but promising journey for fans of the franchise.

Phantom Liberty’s Success Reinforces Franchise Potential

The momentum behind Cyberpunk 2 is also supported by the strong performance of Phantom Liberty, the massive expansion released in 2023. CD Projekt Red revealed that Phantom Liberty has now sold over 10 million copies since its launch. It was included as part of the Cyberpunk 2077– Ultimate Edition, which bundles the base game and all downloadable content. This version was released across PC and console platforms in 2023 and is expected to expand further with upcoming releases on macOS and the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.

The commercial success of Phantom Liberty and the Ultimate Edition underscores the enduring interest in the Cyberpunk universe. With the sequel officially in development, fans can look forward to a new chapter, albeit one that may still be several years away.
