Key Points:

  • Giannandrea exits Apple around April 15 after an eight-year tenure tied to stock vesting.
  • Apple shifted Siri’s control to Mike Rockwell in March 2025, restructuring its AI leadership.
  • His machine learning foundations continue to underpin Apple’s broader AI strategy.

Apple Inc.’s former artificial intelligence chief, John Giannandrea, is expected to leave the company around April 15, when his stock options vest, concluding an eight-year tenure marked by shifting responsibilities and leadership changes.

Apple Prepares For Final Exit After Advisory Role

John Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018, is set to depart the company this week after transitioning to an advisory role following his 2025 retirement announcement. His exit is tied to the vesting of stock options agreed upon when he was hired.

According to Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter, Giannandrea’s final day will likely coincide with the April 15 vesting date. Apple has not publicly confirmed the exact timing of his departure.

The move caps a gradual step-back from day-to-day operations that began late last year, when Giannandrea’s responsibilities were significantly reduced.

Leadership Reshuffle Redefined Apple’s AI Strategy

Giannandrea was initially brought in from Google to strengthen Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities, particularly in voice assistant Siri and long-term projects like the Apple Car.

At the time of his hiring, CEO Tim Cook emphasized shared values. “Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear,” Cook said. “John shares our commitment to privacy and our thoughtful approach.”

However, his role evolved. While he expanded oversight of backend machine learning systems, he reportedly became less involved with Siri development.

In March 2025, control of Siri shifted to Mike Rockwell, known for his work on Apple Vision Pro, who began reporting directly to software chief Craig Federighi. The change marked a significant restructuring of Apple’s AI leadership.

Legacy Reflects Both Setbacks And Foundations

Following his retirement decision in 2025, John Giannandrea’s remaining duties were redistributed among senior executives, including Federighi, services chief Eddy Cue, and Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan.

Despite perceptions that internal changes reflected setbacks, Giannandrea’s work continues to underpin Apple’s broader AI strategy. His contributions to machine learning infrastructure and AI models remain central to the company’s ongoing development efforts.

It remains unclear how active Giannandrea has been in his advisory capacity since December 2025, or whether Apple intended to extend that role beyond the vesting period.

His expected departure comes as Apple intensifies competition in artificial intelligence, an area where rivals have accelerated product rollouts and innovation.

Apple has not issued a formal statement regarding Giannandrea’s exit.
