JetZero Chooses Greensboro for Revolutionary Aircraft Factory

JetZero Inc., a California-based aerospace startup, has announced plans to build its first-ever manufacturing facility in Greensboro, North Carolina. The $4.7 billion project, unveiled at a formal event at Piedmont Triad International Airport, is expected to create over 14,500 jobs by 2036, making it the largest job commitment in the state’s history. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, speaking at the announcement, called the development a major milestone and a nod to the state’s historical roots in aviation, referencing the Wright brothers’ first flight at Kitty Hawk.

The Greensboro site was selected after JetZero evaluated 25 locations across 17 states over a year. The new plant will focus on the production of JetZero’s innovative Z4 aircraft—a blended-wing passenger jet promising up to 50% better fuel efficiency compared to traditional designs. The Z4 will initially be fueled by conventional jet fuel, but the design allows for future conversion to hydrogen. The aircraft is expected to carry around 250 passengers and travel up to 5,000 nautical miles.

Massive Investment Backed by Major Airlines and State Incentives

JetZero’s ambitions are backed by notable industry players, including United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, both of which have entered into conditional purchase agreements for the Z4. In addition to securing approximately $300 million in funding so far, including a U.S. Air Force grant to develop and fly a demonstrator model by 2027, the company plans to reach full production by the early 2030s, aiming to manufacture 20 jets per month.

To support the project, North Carolina and local governments have pledged significant incentives that could total more than $2.35 billion over the coming decades. These include over $1 billion in performance-based tax rebates, $785 million from Guilford County and the city of Greensboro, and $450 million from the state legislature to support infrastructure development. The package also includes job training resources and plans for a new research facility dedicated to composite materials.

According to the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the newly created jobs will offer average annual salaries exceeding $89,000, far above the state average. The announcement solidifies Greensboro’s reputation as a growing hub for aerospace innovation, already home to companies like Honda Aircraft and Boom Supersonic.

Z4 Promises Fuel Efficiency, Comfort, and a Quieter Flight

JetZero CEO Tom O’Leary emphasized that the project represents more than just a manufacturing facility—it’s a leap forward in U.S. aerospace. “We have already shown strong commercial interest and momentum to meet the real airline demand for this aircraft,” O’Leary said, highlighting the Z4’s passenger-friendly design. Unlike conventional planes, the Z4 features top-mounted engines to reduce noise and a wider fuselage for a more spacious cabin experience. The layout separates lavatories from food service areas and allows for larger entryways, all aimed at improving passenger comfort.

While military variants of the Z4 are planned, JetZero is prioritizing the commercial model. With just 225 employees currently, the company is positioning itself as a serious competitor in a market dominated by Boeing and Airbus. As the aerospace sector in North Carolina continues to expand, JetZero’s investment marks a transformative step in shaping the future of aviation in the region.
