Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the artificial intelligence company recorded 80-fold year-over-year growth in revenue and usage during the first quarter, driven largely by demand for its Claude Code product, a pace he said exceeded the company’s operational expectations.
Speaking Wednesday at Anthropic’s Code with Claude developer conference in San Francisco alongside co-founder Daniela Amodei, Amodei said the company originally planned for scenarios ranging from moderate expansion to 10-fold growth, but was unprepared for the scale of demand.
“A mere 10x would have been easier to handle,” Amodei said, according to remarks reported during the event.
The rapid increase in usage placed significant pressure on Anthropic’s computing infrastructure as developers adopted Claude Code for software development tasks. The company said the coding-focused AI tool became a major contributor to revenue growth in recent months.
Claude Code Gains Momentum Among Developers
Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, initially lagged behind competitors in the generative AI market, including the chatbot ChatGPT. The company’s momentum accelerated in late 2025 as Claude Code gained traction among developers and enterprise customers.
Dario Amodei said software engineers are often among the earliest adopters of emerging technologies, helping explain why AI coding tools have expanded rapidly before broader industry adoption.
“This trend could eventually spread across other sectors of the economy,” he said during the conference discussion.

To manage the surge in activity, Anthropic announced Wednesday a deal for 300 megawatts of additional computing power at Colossus One Data Center, a facility linked to SpaceX operations.
Vora said the added computing resources would allow developers to run Claude Code for extended periods each day as usage continues to rise.
The announcement comes as competition intensifies among AI companies racing to secure computing infrastructure and enterprise customers. Demand for high-performance chips and data center capacity has increased sharply as firms expand large language model offerings.
