Mother and Daughter Swept Away in Floodwaters
Tragedy struck in the Bonnieville community on Saturday night when a mother and her young daughter were caught in rising floodwaters. Their vehicle became completely submerged, and they were swept away. According to Hart County officials, the child’s body was recovered later that night, while search and rescue teams found the mother’s body on Sunday afternoon. Their identities have not yet been released.
Death Toll Rises as Floodwaters Continue to Threaten Communities
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed on Monday evening that the death toll had risen to twelve. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, emphasizing that these were not just numbers but individuals who would be missed by their families and communities. He urged residents to keep those affected in their thoughts and prayers.
The majority of fatalities occurred when vehicles became trapped in floodwaters. Beshear warned residents to avoid traveling during the ongoing storm, stressing that staying off the roads could save lives. Rescue Operations and Power Outages
Emergency crews have been conducting extensive rescue operations across Kentucky. Since the storms began on Saturday, approximately 1,000 people have been rescued from flooded areas. Meanwhile, power outages have affected nearly 39,000 homes, with officials warning that strong winds could lead to even more disruptions.
Bob Oravec, a senior forecaster with the National Weather Service, reported that parts of Kentucky and Tennessee had received up to six inches of rain. The heavy downpours overwhelmed local waterways, leaving entire neighborhoods submerged. Photos shared by residents and authorities on social media showed cars floating in floodwaters and buildings severely damaged.
Federal Aid Approved to Assist Kentucky
In response to the crisis, President Donald Trump approved Kentucky’s request for a disaster declaration. This authorization allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate relief efforts and provide much-needed assistance to affected communities.
